The Oscars Round-up: Hurt Locker Sweeps the Oscars

Kathryn Bigelow sweeps the Oscars with the Hurt Locker, making her the first woman in the history of Oscars to win a directing award.

In a star studded award ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, Hurt Locker triumphed over Avatar at the Oscars, winning Best Picture and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow which made her the first woman in history to receive the directing award. Made for just $15 million (£10 million) the tense, low budget Iraq war drama won out over James Cameron's sprawling science fiction epic which has become the biggest grossing film of all time, taking $2.5 billion (£1.5 billion) at the box office.
Seated right behind his ex- wife Avatar director James Cameron rose to his feet and applauded at her victory. Avatar won three awards for technical categories - visual effects, cinematography and art direction.

Jeff Bridges claimed his Oscar for best actor playing a drunken country singer in drama Crazy Heart. Sandra Bullock was named best actress for The Blind Side.
She won the Oscar for her portrayal as a strong-willed mother who takes a homeless youth off the street and helps him to become an American Football star. Bullock added: "I would like to thank what this film is about for me which are the mums that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from. Those mums and parents never get thanked." The dark drama Precious won two Oscars including best supporting actress for Mo'Nique. Christoph Waltz won best supporting actor for his turn as a menacing Nazi officer in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds.

For the Best Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher achieved the award for Precious: based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. In Oscars 2010 winners, for the movie Up, Disney Pixar’s balloon escapade took award for the best animated attribute. This award was first given in 2002. Ryan Birgham and T Bone Burnett achieved award for the natural composition of the son ‘Crazy Heart.’ The Oscar Award for the best original screenplay was awarded to Mark Boal for the Hurt Locker. Tina Fey and Robert Downey presented the Award. Boal dedicated the award to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the wounded and those who had not made it home. He also dedicated the Award to his father, who had died a 
month ago.

Carey Mulligan joined Zoe Saldana, the avatar start to present the Oscar Award for best short films. It went to Logorama for Animated film, music by Prudence for documentary short film and the Best short film award was given to The New Tenants. The Oscar Award for the best make up went to Star Trek. The Best Adapted Screenplay award went to Precious, adapted by Geoffrey Fletcher from the book Push.
